Survived Hurricane Ike in Texas

Well we made it through the hurricane. The link above is some of the pictures from it. Play the slideshow and check it out. We stayed here and I put plywood up on all the windows. Everything went fine but we were without power for 16 DAYS!! House was fine but our oak trees got hammered. Lots of debris. Kids school was without power for 2 weeks too. Things are finally getting back to normal though. We stayed with Lindas relatives who had power and they live about 20 miles away. Thanks God because it is tough here without power in the heat. Anyway, lets get this blogging thing going again. I just sent Crawfish an invite to post something and Bruce well....

Wow, John - as bad as that looks, it appears that your home fared well (the red brick house with plywood in the photos?).
It is amazing how we have come so dependent on electricity. We lost power for a week last winter and had to abandon our home within 15 hours - no heat, no water (well pump needs power) and no cooking. "Camping" in your home runs out of fun in just a few days.
Glad to hear you are all well. Lea looks pretty happy to be helping clean up.

I am closing in my deck now to make a sunroom that will become our new living room this fall when I install a wood stove - that way we can at least stay warm if the power goes out. Wood fire heat is GREAT on cold days. Hang in there.

I agree with you 100% that it sucks to be without electricity! I've been through 3 hurricanes now and they are nothing compared to sitting around in the South Florida humidity for days without ac. I went through a blizzard in Cleveland that knocked the electric and heat out for five days and that wasn't any fun either. I think this is the first stable weather state I've lived in for a long time. Hurricanes, a near-miss tornado and being in a car struck by lightning in Florida; Tornado Alley in Oklahoma; blizzards and lake effect snow in Ohio; I'm enjoying this NC weather a lot more.
Glad to hear you and the family got through it okay!
